That said, there are faint signs of life buried in the recent form. Those two fourth-place finishes in the middle of the sequence show the horse has got close enough to the action to suggest it isn't simply making up the numbers — it just hasn't been able to push through into the prizes when it mattered. A seventh and an eighth bookend those near-misses, and there's a gap in the record too, which often points to a break for a minor setback or a reset in planning.
What works in Glasgow Kiss's favour is who is doing the training. Hugo Palmer, based at Malpas in Cheshire, has sent out 66 winners already this season — that's a yard in serious form, with horses clearly fit, well-prepared and ready to run. When a trainer is firing at that rate, it usually means the horses are getting every chance. Glasgow Kiss hasn't taken those chances yet, but it's hard to argue the opportunity hasn't been there. Raced just one day ago, this is a horse still very much in the thick of its season, and at three years old, there's time yet to find the right race and put it all together.
