Ghumama

What makes Ghumama interesting is where those wins happened. Both came at Dundalk, and Dundalk alone. From 21 races at that track, it has won twice — that's roughly 1 in every 10 races there, compared to a career win rate of just 1 in 22 overall. That's not a coincidence. Something about that track suits this horse, whether it's the surface, the shape of the course, or simply the familiar routine. The problem is that the last of those Dundalk wins came in February 2023 — now 39 months ago — and the six races since have brought nothing better than a second place. The clock is ticking.

The form figures from its most recent six races — 18-13-12-6-2-13 — paint a picture of a horse that flickered briefly into contention (that second place stands out) but has otherwise been finishing well down the field. It raced just yesterday, which means it's being kept busy, and that level of activity at this stage of a career suggests the yard still believes there's a race to be won somewhere.

Normal conditions bring out the best in Ghumama — on a standard surface it has won 2 from 21, or about 1 in every 10 races, which is its best strike across any ground type. Its preferred trip of a mile and three to a mile and four furlongs also sharpens its chances meaningfully: 2 wins from 13 races at that distance works out at roughly 1 in 6, comfortably its strongest record anywhere. Regular partner J M Sheridan has ridden it 11 times for that sole win together, so the combination knows each other well even if the results have been modest.

Ghumama is not a headline horse, but it's a genuine, consistent competitor. If it's ever going to win again, the smart money says it'll be back at Dundalk, at a mile and a half, on a dry day.
