The recent form makes for difficult reading. Looking at the last six races, the best result was a second place, sandwiched between a string of mid-field and back-of-the-pack finishes. That runner-up spot is the one flicker of promise in an otherwise frustrating record, proof that Getaway Sam can at least get into the mix on a good day — just not quite close enough to win.
What is worth noting is that Getaway Sam raced just yesterday, so this is very much a horse in active campaign. Trainer Matt Sheppard, who operates out of Eastnor in Herefordshire, has already sent out seven winners this season, which tells you the yard knows how to get a horse ready to win. The question is whether Getaway Sam can finally be one of them. Sometimes a horse simply needs the right day, the right race, and a small slice of luck — and with a trainer who is clearly in decent form, that combination is not impossible to imagine.
