K R Burke, who trains her from his yard in Coverham, North Yorkshire, is having a remarkable season — 140 winners so far this term, which is the kind of output that puts a stable firmly in the upper tier of British racing. That he has Gesayed in his string matters. Speaking earlier this year, Burke was measured but clearly taken with her, describing her as a "dark one" with plenty left to show. His feeling is that she has not yet done enough to justify taking on the very best in a classic trial, so the plan is to build her gradually rather than throw her in at the deep end.

That caution is telling. Trainers who are excited but patient tend to be the ones with something real on their hands. Burke does not think she is Guineas-class — the most prestigious early-season races for three-year-olds — but his description of her as a "nice filly" from someone with 140 winners on the board this season is not nothing. Gesayed raced just one day ago, so whatever comes next is close, and with her debut win still only eleven months old, she is very much a horse still working out what she can become.
