Davies herself was refreshingly honest after his first win at Wetherby in October 2025, admitting he was a bit fortunate that day and still had plenty to learn. She'd tried a tongue-tie on him there, which seemed to hamper rather than help — he jumped poorly compared to a previous run at Sedgefield, where he'd been given his head and allowed to lead from the front. That detail matters: Genbu is a keen horse, the sort who runs better when he's not fighting his own equipment or being held up. Let him bowl along and set his own rhythm, and he's a different animal.

That lesson appears to have been taken on board. His recent form had looked modest — finishing sixth, eighth, and then well back in a couple of races — but he bounced straight back to winning at Uttoxeter just this week, on 16 May 2026. That is his most recent run, and it puts him back in the winner's enclosure for the second time in his career. Davies has sent out five winners from her yard this season, so the operation is in decent shape, and Genbu is clearly playing his part.

He tends to race at Class 4 level — solid, competitive racing without quite reaching the top tier — and his best trips are between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, where he has won 1 from 6 races. He is not a horse who is going to trouble the big festivals, but at his level, on a decent surface, over a staying trip, he is exactly the kind of straightforward, willing horse that makes jumping so enjoyable to follow. Cheap to buy, honest in the main, and clearly peaking at just the right moment.
