"It was probably trainer error running him over 5 furlongs," Spencer admits. The horse was built to gallop, not sprint, and the trainer recognised that in time. A couple of weeks ago at Thirsk, G'Emmethegreenlite was stretched out to six furlongs for the first time, and the penny began to drop. Spencer now has his mark — the official racing rating that allows him to enter the horse in the right kind of races — and plans nursery races at York, where the weights are kinder and the opportunity to finally break through looks genuine. Spencer is emphatic about his belief: this big, heavy horse is going to have a significant future and will end up highly rated once his engine matches his frame.
Based at Malton in North Yorkshire, Spencer's yard has already sent out thirteen winners this season, so he knows how to get horses ready to win. With G'Emmethegreenlite actively racing and now running at a distance that suits him, the patient groundwork is about to pay off.
