Garnacho

His last win came four weeks ago at Wexford, and his form since then has been patchy: a place, then a run outside the points, two more disappointments, and a blank on his most recent outing just a day ago. That last run aside, there are hints of something useful. Garnacho has won twice on normal ground — that is 2 wins from 5 races on a standard track (40%) — which means conditions matter to him. He is clearly not the type to flourish when the ground is heavy or hard, so Mark Fahey's team at Cloneygath will be watching the going closely before running him again.

The relationship with Thomas O'Connor tells part of the story too. The jockey has ridden him five times and won once, a win rate of 20 percent — meaningfully better than Garnacho's overall record. That suggests the right rider can coax more out of him than he sometimes shows. At seven years old, Garnacho is not a young prospect anymore, but he is also far from finished. If the ground stays in his favour and the yard can find the right race, he remains capable of giving winning days to those who have stuck with him this long.
