The distance matters too. When Gardener races over a mile and six furlongs to two miles, he has won 3 of 8 races — 38% of the time. That is exceptional by any measure, and it tells you something important: this is a horse who needs to be given time to warm into a race, to find his rhythm over a real test of stamina. He is not a horse built for speed over shorter trips. He is built for grinding it out.

His recent form makes interesting reading. In his last six races, he has won two and placed in three of the others, finishing fifth just once. That run includes a win at Hexham as recently as four weeks ago, which means Gardener arrives in your awareness as a horse currently in the form of his life. Sowersby, who has sent out eight winners from his yard already this season, knows this horse well and has suggested publicly that, given a realistic weight to carry, there are more wins to come. That is the quiet confidence of a trainer who believes the best is not yet behind his horse.

The one slight puzzle is the partnership with jockey Lewis Stones, who has ridden Gardener five times without getting to the winner's enclosure together. That is not necessarily a red flag — plenty of combinations simply need more time, or the right race — but it is worth knowing if you want to follow Gardener closely. What is not in doubt is the horse's quality over the right trip, on the right track, in the right conditions. For a ten-year-old, Gardener is ageing about as gracefully as anyone could hope for.
