The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. In its last six races, the best finishing position has been sixth, and two finishes of tenth and one of twelfth suggest a horse that is frequently struggling to make any impression at all on its rivals. That latest run came just yesterday, so at least nobody can accuse the team of giving up — Fumbleinthejungle is still out there, still trying. Whether that persistence will eventually pay off is another matter entirely.
What makes this particularly striking is the level at which all this is happening. Class 6 is the bottom rung of British racing — these are the races designed specifically for horses that have not been able to win elsewhere. Fumbleinthejungle has run eleven times at that level and has not won once. In theory, this should be the division where a horse like this finds its feet. So far, it has not found them.
Trainer John David Riches operates out of Pilling in Lancashire and has sent out five winners already this season, so the yard clearly knows how to get a horse to the winning post. For whatever reason, Fumbleinthejungle has not yet been one of them. Whether that changes any time soon, only the racing gods know — but on current evidence, hope is about the only thing this horse has in abundance.
