Freewheelin

The recent form makes for sobering reading. Looking at the last six races in reverse order, Freewheelin has finished fourth, fourth, eleventh, fourth, tenth, and seventh. There are a couple of respectable efforts buried in there — three fourth-place finishes suggest the horse is at least competitive — but that gap between "nearly there" and actually winning has proved impossible to bridge. Now returning from a break of roughly nine months, the question is whether the rest has done it good or simply extended the drought.

Freewheelin tends to run at Class 6 level, which is the bottom tier of British racing — these are everyday races, not the glamorous kind. At that level, the horse has 2 wins from 21 races, winning about 1 in 10. The longer trips suit it best: both wins have come over two miles or more, from 15 attempts at those distances, a win rate of roughly 1 in 8. That's not spectacular, but it at least points to where Freewheelin has the best chance of being competitive.

One intriguing footnote is the partnership with jockey Graham Lee. The two have been paired up six times and have yet to find the winner's enclosure together — six rides, zero wins. That's not necessarily a damning verdict on either horse or rider, but it is a combination that hasn't clicked yet. Whether they line up together on the comeback trail remains to be seen.

Freewheelin is the kind of horse that finds its way onto a racecard without generating much excitement, and the record gives you a fair picture of why. But a long break, a return to the distances it handles best, and a bit of luck with conditions could yet produce a surprise. It has won before. It just needs reminding how.
