The debut win came at Wolverhampton in April 2024, and even then the team were looking elsewhere. The jockey that day admitted the horse was not in love with the tight, artificial surface and was essentially being taught how to race — and he nearly did not know whether he had won. The striking thing is the footnote: "he's made for turf racing." That was not wishful thinking. When Fouroneohfever eventually got onto grass and a bigger track, the penny dropped fast.

Chester is where this horse has truly announced itself. Two wins from just 3 races at a course that most horses find baffling — it is one of the smallest, sharpest tracks in Britain, all bends and barely a straight in sight — is the kind of record that makes trainers plan their season around it. When the assistant trainer said after one Chester win that this was "a big-framed horse who will continue to improve," they were watching a horse that had just managed something Chester routinely punishes bigger animals for trying.

The puzzle is the Class 3 record: 0 wins from 8 races at that level. In other words, Fouroneohfever has found a ceiling each time it has been stepped up into better company — but the wins have kept coming at the level below, and the team clearly believe the ceiling is about to move. Pauling has spoken openly about the horse stepping up in distance, and even floated the Copper Horse — a prestigious Royal Ascot prize — as a potential target if the rating allows it. That is ambitious, and deliberately so.
