Flying Star

The recent run of form makes for sobering reading: finishing 8th, 7th, 5th, 7th, 7th, and 12th in the last six races, with that 5th place the closest thing to a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating sequence. Seven of Flying Star's fourteen races have come at Class 6, the entry-level tier of British racing, and the horse has yet to win at that level either. When a horse can't break through at the easiest grade available, it raises genuine questions about whether a winning day is coming at all.

Jockey Gina Mangan has partnered Flying Star six times now, and the pair have yet to find the winner's post together. That's not necessarily a criticism of either — sometimes a horse simply hasn't found its moment yet — but six attempts without a win does make you wonder whether something needs to change in approach. Trainer John Berry, based in Newmarket, has had a productive season with 13 winners from his yard, so the expertise is clearly there. Flying Star raced just yesterday, which shows the team is keeping the horse busy and hopeful.

At fourteen races into a career with nothing in the win column, Flying Star is the kind of horse that tests everyone's patience — the trainer, the jockey, and whoever watches it run week after week. The two placed finishes are proof it isn't completely out of its depth, just frustratingly unable to take that final step. Whether a change in conditions, distance, or competition level could unlock something different remains to be seen, but right now Flying Star is a horse still searching for its moment.
