The horse made its debut at Windsor on 22 June and won straightaway, then backed that up with another victory at Ascot three weeks ago. That Ascot win is worth noting: one of the top racecourses in Britain, and Flann Sunna managed it in its second career race. Between those two victories came a second-place finish, so the form reads as win, place, win—solid and consistent progression for a horse still in its first season.
Flann Sunna is trained by S & E Crisford's yard at Newmarket, one of the most prominent racing centres in England. The yard has already sent out 78 winners this season, so the horse is surrounded by expertise and experience. At this age and with this record, Flann Sunna looks like exactly the kind of prospect that racing people get excited about: early success, multiple victories at good venues, and still plenty of time to develop. Yesterday's fifth place might be a reminder that every horse has learning to do, but two wins from three races at this stage suggests this youngster has genuine ability.
