That sole victory came at Fairyhouse in January 2025, and it arrived with a telling postscript. Jockey Paul Townend, who rides for the yard regularly and knows a good horse when he's on one, came away describing Fishery Lane as "a strong stayer" — the kind of horse who gets better the further he goes, and whose jumping would sharpen with more experience. That is not the assessment of someone writing off a horse; that is someone flagging that there is more to come, provided the conditions are right.

The trainer is Willie Mullins, based in Co Carlow, and his yard is one of the most powerful operations in jump racing. This season alone they have sent out 220 winners — a staggering number that reflects both the size and quality of the string. Mullins spoke warmly about Fishery Lane before the horse's first win, saying he had done impressive work at home and that he was hoping the horse could hold its own at the top level. When a trainer of that calibre talks about potential, it tends to mean something.

Fishery Lane raced just one day ago, so this is very much a horse in active training and still being placed in races with a purpose. The win at Fairyhouse is now 16 months in the past, and the last six runs have not produced another victory, but second and third-place finishes have kept appearing in that sequence. The picture that emerges is of a horse who competes honestly, who may not have found his ideal conditions yet, and who has a trainer and jockey quietly convinced that longer distances are where the real Fishery Lane shows up. Whether that theory gets tested soon is the interesting question.
