The trainer, Eve Johnson Houghton, operates out of Blewbury in Oxfordshire and has already sent out 39 winners this season alone — a number that tells you this is a yard that knows how to get a horse ready to run and win. Johnson Houghton has built a reputation for placing horses well and for being patient with her better prospects. A yard firing at that kind of volume gives a debutant every chance of arriving at the track fit and primed.
There is nothing else to say with certainty yet — First Mate has not raced, so there is no form to analyse and no performances to weigh up. But given the speed in the bloodlines and the strength of the operation behind the horse, this is a debut worth watching with interest.
