Fine Casting

Trained by Ben Pauling at his Naunton yard in Gloucestershire — a yard that has sent out 86 winners already this season, which tells you this is a genuinely productive operation — Fine Casting tends to line up in Class 3 races, one rung below the top level. That is a competitive bracket, and winning 2 from 17 at that grade, roughly 1 in every 8 or 9, is hard-earned rather than handed to it. Most of its work gets done over distances between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, where it has won 1 from 4 — a 25% win rate that suggests the trip suits it well.

The most recent win came at Bangor-on-Dee on 12 November 2025, and the horse is clearly still in good heart — it raced just five days ago, making this very much an active campaign rather than a quiet wind-down. That recent form reads 3-–-4-–-1-2, which in plain terms means a second, a win, two mid-pack finishes, and a third from the last six runs where a finishing position is recorded. There are a couple of gaps in there, but the overall picture is a horse still running with purpose.

Kielan Woods has been the regular partner, riding Fine Casting in 11 of its races and winning 2 of them — that's an 18% win rate together, or roughly 1 in every 5 and a half. That is meaningfully better than the horse's overall career average, which suggests the partnership has something to it. Fine Casting's first win came at Ffos Las back in December 2021, and it has been a consistent if unspectacular presence on the circuit ever since — the sort of horse a trainer relies on to keep the wheels turning, always honest, always thereabouts.
