The highlight of his career so far came on 10 August 2024, when he won the Newmarket July course Class 2 — one of the better races you can win in Britain. It was the kind of result that suggests there is a genuinely useful horse in here when everything clicks. His first win had come a few months earlier at Great Yarmouth in April 2024, and at the time his then-trainer Tom Clover described him as "a really exciting prospect," admitting the Yarmouth win had been a pleasant surprise given how well he had been working at home. That combination — impressive at home, winning away — tends to get people excited.

Since then, though, the story has been one of unfulfilled potential. His last six results read 4-5-6-11-7-7, and he has not won in any of them. His current trainer Chelsea Banham, based at Cowlinge in Suffolk, has been candid about what went wrong at his most recent Newmarket run — he was carrying his head in the air, possibly got his tongue over the bit, and simply did not perform. Banham's view is straightforward: he was clearly not right, and he is clearly better than that. The plan was to give him a spell in the paddock and reset, which explains why he has been off the track for roughly four months now.

The question now is whether a refreshed Fifty Nifty, on a dry summer track, can remind everyone what he looked like when Tom Clover called him exciting.
