Ferando

Trained by Barry John Murphy out of a small yard in Caerfyrddin, Carmarthenshire — a team that has managed just one winner so far this season — Ferando is not exactly operating from a powerhouse base. Murphy has been open about his frustrations, singling out a run at Newbury as a particular low point. He has said publicly that the team were genuinely disappointed that day and are not entirely sure what went wrong, which at least suggests there is something better lurking in there — though Ferando has not yet offered the evidence to back that up.

What is slightly encouraging is that Ferando raced just yesterday, meaning Murphy has kept faith with him and continues to look for the right opportunity. At six years old, he is no youngster, and time is not infinitely on his side. But horses can surprise you, and a first win — when it comes — will feel all the sweeter for the wait. For now, though, patience is the only thing Ferando has asked of everyone around him.
