Fenlander

The recent form tells an interesting story. Over the last six races, Fenlander has finished third, second, third, second, and sixth at various points, with a sixth thrown in at the start of that sequence too. Two runner-up finishes in there suggest this is a horse that gets competitive, gets close, and then finds one too good. That is a frustrating pattern to watch if you follow this horse closely, but it also means Fenlander is consistently involved rather than tailing off at the back. It raced just yesterday, so the yard — sorry, the team — clearly believe there is a race to be won somewhere.

That race has so far proved elusive at Class 5 level, which is where most of Fenlander's career has been spent. Class 5 is the bread-and-butter level of British racing, and even here the record reads zero wins from seven attempts. To put that plainly: the horse has had every opportunity to break its duck in relatively accessible company and has not managed it. Seven races at that level without a win is the kind of record that starts to raise questions.

Trainer Pam Sly operates a small yard out of Thorney in Cambridgeshire and has sent out seven winners this season, which shows the stable knows how to get horses to the line first. The puzzle is finding the right opportunity for Fenlander to join that list. Sly is clearly persisting with the horse — running it as recently as yesterday — which suggests she sees something worth chasing. Whether Fenlander eventually delivers on all those near-misses or becomes one of racing's eternal nearly-horses is the question that keeps things interesting.
