Fat Sam

The last time Fat Sam won a race was at Newton Abbot in July 2022 — nearly four years ago now. Since then he has put together six consecutive runs without a win, though the recent form figures of 6-4-2-3-3-2 tell a more nuanced story. He has been finishing second and third regularly, which means he is not disgracing himself. He is just finding one or two too good. At his level — Class 4, which sits in the middle tier of British racing — that margin between placing and winning can be razor thin, and Fat Sam has been living right on it.

His best results have come at that Class 4 level, where he has won 4 of his 20 races there — 20%, or 1 in every 5 — which is actually a solid record for a horse operating consistently at the same grade. His partnership with jockey James Davies is the most established of his career: the two have raced together 23 times and won on 4 occasions, a win rate of around 1 in 6. That kind of long-running combination suggests a team that knows this horse well.

Now the interesting part: Fat Sam has not been seen on a racecourse for seven months. That is a significant absence for an 11-year-old, and it raises genuine questions. Horses do not take long breaks without a reason, and when older horses return from that kind of layoff, they can go one of two ways — they come back refreshed and sharper, or the rust shows. Trainer Chris Down's yard has sent out 3 winners this season, so there is form in the camp. Whether Fat Sam can add to that tally and end a 45-month drought is the question everyone watching him will be asking when he eventually lines up again.
