The highlights are well-spaced but real. A first win at The Curragh in September 2023 — one of the most prestigious tracks in Ireland — was followed by another at Killarney in October 2024. That second win came at the longer distances Fair Damsel seems to genuinely appreciate: between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, she has won 1 of 5 races, a 20% win rate that is meaningfully better than her overall record. In simple terms, stretch the trip out and she becomes a different proposition.

The concern right now is that her last win was 20 months ago. Her recent form reads 5th, 12th, two unplaced runs, then a 2nd and a 1st going back further — suggesting a horse that was building nicely into that Killarney success but has not been able to back it up since. Six races without a win is not a crisis at this level, but it is a stretch that the Cian Collins yard at Navan will be keen to end. Collins has sent out 20 winners already this season, so the operation is clearly in form — it is just Fair Damsel who has gone quiet.

Her regular jockey Shane O'Callaghan has ridden her six times and got the best out of her once — a 17% win rate, or 1 from 6, which is a reasonable partnership without being exceptional. She raced just yesterday, which means her legs are still warm and the team clearly believe there is more to come. Whether the longer trips, which suit her best on paper, can coax another win out of her remains the question. She is not a horse who makes headlines often, but when the distance is right and the ground plays fair, Fair Damsel has shown she knows how to win.
