Trained by Nick Kent out of Brigg in Lincolnshire, Exiguus is part of a small yard that has managed one winner so far this season. That's a lean return, and it means expectations need to be kept in check. Kent's operation isn't one of the big names in the sport, which makes finding the right race all the more important for a horse still waiting to get off the mark.

What's worth noting is that third-place finish — it shows Exiguus can at least mix it with horses at this level, even if converting that into an actual win has so far proved a step too far. At six years old, time isn't exactly on its side, but horses can and do find their moment. The question is whether the right opportunity comes along before the patience of everyone involved runs out.
