The most recent form figures — 5, 11, 7, 6, 6, 8 — tell a consistent story, and not in a good way. There are no near misses buried in there, no second places that suggest a win is just around the corner. The horse raced just yesterday, which at least shows it is fit and active, but the pattern has been stubbornly the same: mid-pack finishes, no real threat at the business end of races.
Jockey Zak Wheatley has been the regular partner, riding Everydaysasaturday in five of those eight races without managing to get it into contention once. That is not necessarily a reflection on Wheatley — a horse has to have the ability to perform, and right now this one simply has not shown it on the track. Trainer Declan Carroll, based in Malton in North Yorkshire, is clearly having a decent season overall — 22 winners from his yard this term is a healthy return and shows he knows how to get horses to win races. The puzzle, for now, is finding whatever unlocks this particular one.
There will be races out there designed to give less experienced or lower-rated horses a better chance of competing, and that is almost certainly where the team will be looking next. Carroll has the winners on the board elsewhere to suggest he is patient and capable. Everydaysasaturday may simply need the right conditions, the right trip, or just a bit more time and experience before things click. At three years old, the door is not closed — but it is fair to say the opening chapter of this horse's career has been a quiet one.
