The recent form tells a mixed story. A second-place finish a few runs back offered a genuine flicker of hope, but either side of that the results have been modest — finishing sixth, seventh, and eighth on other occasions. It raced just yesterday, so it is very much still active and being campaigned regularly. Paul O'Brien has been the regular rider, partnering Ever Ready five times without a win between them. That is not necessarily a criticism of either horse or jockey — sometimes a combination simply hasn't clicked yet, or the right opportunity hasn't come along.
Trainer Pam Sly operates out of Thorney in Cambridgeshire and has sent out seven winners this season, so the yard clearly knows how to get a horse ready to win. Ever Ready has mostly been running at Class 5, which is towards the lower end of the racing ladder — essentially the level where horses go to find races they can be competitive in. Four attempts at that level and still no win is a puzzle the team at Thorney will be working hard to solve. Whether the answer is a different trip, a different surface, or simply a change of luck, that is the question hanging over this horse's next run.
