The breeding offers some basis for optimism. The sire Maxios was a high-class performer in Germany and France, and has a reputation for producing horses that are straightforward and consistent. The dam's side carries the influence of Kris Kin, the 2003 Epsom Derby winner, which suggests there may be a bit of stamina in the tank once Evans Wishes settles into a racing routine.
At four years old, this is a relatively mature debut. Most racehorses appear at two or three, so arriving at four can sometimes mean the yard has taken extra time to get the horse right — or simply that they wanted to wait for conditions that suit. Mark Michael McNiff's small Sligo operation has already sent out five winners this season, which for a yard of that size is a solid return and suggests the team knows when a horse is ready to run. Whether Evans Wishes is ready to win first time out remains to be seen, but they arrive from a yard that is clearly in decent form.
