Evaluation

Trained by the partnership of Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore's son Michael, based at Milnathort in Perthshire, Evaluation comes from a yard that has sent out 49 winners already this season — so this is not a small operation nursing a modest horse. They clearly believe in this one. The trainer described Evaluation as "very exciting" after a strong second in the Northumberland Plate, one of the most prestigious staying races in the north of England, and immediately flagged a move into hurdling as the next step. That is the kind of comment that sharpens the ears — it suggests there is a new chapter being written here rather than a familiar one being repeated.

The ground matters enormously with this horse. On normal conditions, Evaluation has won 4 of 11 races — that's 36%, which is a genuinely impressive ratio. Take it off that surface, and the picture changes. Its last win came at Ayr on 13 November 2024, now roughly seven months ago, and it hasn't won in its last six races, though it has placed in four of them. The recent form reads 4-2-3-2-5-6 — consistently competitive without quite getting its nose in front.

What complicates the picture is that Class 2 record: 0 wins from 13 races. Thirteen chances at the top tier and nothing to show for it. At a lower level, this horse is a genuine threat. Nudge it into the best company and something changes. That is not unusual — plenty of horses find their ceiling — but it does make the trainer's excitement about hurdling all the more interesting. Perhaps a switch of discipline is exactly what this horse needs to find a level where it can stop being a nearly-horse and start winning again. After seven months off, Evaluation returns with that question unanswered.
