Ettore arrived at Nicky Henderson's yard in Upper Lambourn having previously been trained on the flat by Roger Varian, a move that signals a change of direction entirely — he's now learning to jump, which is a different sport with a different learning curve. Henderson himself described Ettore as "a fine, big horse," and noted that for a horse his age to take on jumping, he's a very good physical type. That matters. Jumping asks a lot of a horse — it requires size, scope, and the right temperament — and not every horse that crosses over from flat racing has the build to make it work.

Henderson's yard is one of the most successful jumping operations in Britain. This season alone, it has sent out 85 winners, which gives you a sense of the scale and quality of the operation Ettore finds himself in. Being part of a yard that busy means competition for good races is fierce, but it also means the horses around him are being prepared by some of the sharpest minds in the sport.

The recent form — a third place last time out, another third a couple of runs back — suggests Ettore is competitive without yet being able to seal the deal. He raced just one day ago, so he is very much mid-campaign and actively being placed in races. A horse like this, still finding his feet over jumps, building race experience and physical strength, is not one you judge harshly on a win column that reads zero. The first win tends to come once everything clicks — the jumping, the fitness, the right race on the right day. Henderson's yard has a knack for finding that moment.
