Esticky End

Last August, Esticky End won at the Irish track, and that success was no accident. Of its six races there, two have ended in victory, giving it a win rate of one in three at that course. Tom McGuinness's horse performs similarly well when normal ground conditions underfoot replace the extremes of mud or rock-hard earth. On standard going, it has won four times from 18 attempts — roughly one in every four or five races — compared to a career average of only one win in every eight races overall. The horse also shows marked preference for distances between seven furlongs and a mile, winning two of six races over that range, a 33 percent return that stands out.

The most recent run, just a day ago, brought another victory at Wexford. This was no fluke recovery from a poor run: Esticky End had already won one of its previous six races, placed second in the race before that, and finished in the money twice more. What is less encouraging is the partnership with jockey Dylan Robinson. The pair have raced together ten times and failed to land a winner once — suggesting either a mismatch of styles or simple bad luck.

Competing mostly in Class 6 races, Esticky End will never be a headline horse. But for a yard that sent out only a single winner all season, and for a horse that knows its trade and does it best on home ground at beloved Wexford, there is something honest and straightforward here. It may lack the speed or class to climb higher, but it gets the job done where it matters.
