Equality

The career numbers tell an interesting tale. Five wins and ten places from 27 races works out to roughly 1 win in every 5 races — a solid record, but what lifts Equality above the ordinary is where and when those wins have come. Two of his five victories have been in top races in Britain: a Class 1 at Sandown Park in July 2023, and a Class 2 win at Windsor three weeks before that. He also reached the podium in a Group 1 at the Curragh, one of the most prestigious races in Ireland, finishing third in the Flying Five. That is a horse operating at the sharp end of the sport, not drifting around the lower grades.

Ground conditions matter enormously for Equality. On slightly soft ground — a touch of moisture in the surface — he has won 3 from 6 races, a remarkable 50% record. On normal ground he wins 2 in every 7, which is still perfectly respectable. Hills has been clear that very fast, dry ground is a concern, which makes his Dubai trip earlier this year — where the ground was too quick — easy to forgive. He came home well and landed a valuable Class 2 win at Musselburgh in April 2024, his most recent success, now two years ago. Windsor is where he feels most at home: two wins from just three visits there, a course record that most horses would envy.

The last six runs — finishing tenth, then fourth twice, then thirteenth, eighth, and seventeenth — look grim on paper, but context softens the picture. The most recent run at the Temple Stakes was a near-write-off from stall one, caught on the wrong side of a race that split decisively. Hills was quick to draw a line through it. Equality has had a break of 47 days since, and the yard has been in strong form this season, sending out 31 winners. The talent is clearly still there. Whether the conditions finally align for this quietly remarkable horse is the question worth watching.
