Elfride

The level Elfride competes at — Class 5, the lower tier of British racing — means the prize money is modest and the competition is made up of horses with similar records. Even there, the results have been hard to come by: one win from 20 races at that level works out to 5%, or roughly one in every twenty attempts. The most recent run came just yesterday, so this is an active horse still being campaigned, but the last six outings have brought no wins and only scattered placed efforts — a fifth and a sixth among some blank results.

Harry Atkins has ridden Elfride seven times without a winner between them, which is a tough run for any jockey-horse partnership. Trainer Richard Phillips, based at Adlestrop in Gloucestershire, has sent out three winners this season, so the yard is capable of finding the right race for the right horse — but Elfride has not been that horse for over three years now, with that Uttoxeter win in May 2023 standing alone on the record.

At 10, Elfride is at an age where most racehorses are winding down or have already retired, and with no win in 36 months, the question of where a victory might come from is a difficult one to answer. Still, the horse raced just yesterday, which counts for something — there are the yard who clearly believe there is another day to be had. Whether Uttoxeter holds the answer again remains to be seen.
