The recent form tells the story. Second place, then three consecutive thirds, another third, and another third again — Elated is a bridesmaid, not a bride. That sort of pattern usually means one of two things: either the horse is operating at its ceiling and facing stronger rivals, or there's a small detail (ground conditions, a different tactic, better riding) that's holding it back. Either way, Ben Pauling's yard at Naunton is clearly keeping it competitive. The trainer has already sent out 91 winners this season, so the stable is firing, which makes Elated's lack of a breakthrough all the more curious.
The horse is active right now, having raced as recently as yesterday, so we'll soon see whether it can finally translate that consistent form into a victory. For a horse that keeps showing up in the money, a win should come eventually — but the longer the drought continues, the more you have to wonder whether it ever will.
