The recent form gives a little reason for cautious interest. Finishing fourth and fifth in its last few outings suggests El Fontenaro is at least competitive at some level, even if it has not been able to cross the line first in any of its last six races. It raced just yesterday, so this is a horse very much in the thick of its campaign right now.
Ronan Whelan has been the regular jockey, partnering El Fontenaro in eight of its sixteen races — but that partnership has yet to produce a win either. Eight rides together with nothing to show for it is a run of patience-testing bad luck, or a sign that the horse simply has not found the right opportunity yet. Trainer Jarlath P Fahey, based at Monastervin in County Kildare, has sent out three winners this season, so the yard is capable of getting horses to the winner's enclosure — just not this one so far. For El Fontenaro, the first win remains the target, and at four years old, there is still time to find it.
