El Burhan

The past six months tell a mixed story. His most recent outing, just a day ago, ended in eighth place, but before that he was finishing in the middle of the field at best — a fourth, a fifth, and a ninth sandwiched between a second and that eighth. It is not the form of a horse in a winning groove. Yet trainer George Boughey, who runs a powerful Newmarket yard that has sent out 99 winners this season, clearly sees something worth nurturing. Boughey noted after the Ayr win that El Burhan had taken time to mature, that he "wasn't quite right" at one point and needed a break, and that he "hadn't got to the bottom of him yet" — trainer-speak for a horse with untapped potential.

What makes El Burhan interesting is his consistency at specific distances and ground conditions. Over seven furlongs to a mile, he wins roughly 3 of every 5 races — a 60% win rate at his sweet spot. He is equally effective on soft or wet ground and normal conditions, winning 2 of 3 races on each, which is a rare versatility. His regular rider, Jim Crowley, has won 3 of 6 races aboard him, a 50% win rate that hints at a genuine partnership.

The question now is whether El Burhan can rediscover the form that brought those Class 2 wins. Eleven months is a long time in a racing calendar, and while the recent outing showed he is still sound, a horse that has not won since September is at risk of sliding down the handicap. But Boughey's faith in his potential, combined with his proven ability to deliver at the top level, means El Burhan is worth watching if the right race and conditions come along.
