What we do know is the family background. Edge Of Desire is by Sergei Prokofiev, a sire whose offspring tend to show plenty of early speed, and comes out of a Mehmas mare — another influence associated with sharp, precocious youngsters. On paper, this is a horse built to run well young, which at least suggests the debut won't be wasted.
The trainer is Richard Spencer, who operates out of Newmarket — the heartbeat of British flat racing, where the competition among yards is fierce and reputations are hard-won. Spencer's operation has sent out 30 winners already this season, which tells you this is a yard in good form and confident enough to run a horse when they believe it is ready. When a trainer based in Newmarket is doing that kind of volume, they know what they are looking at with a young horse. Whether Edge Of Desire is ready to win first time out remains to be seen, but the team clearly think it is worth finding out.
