At Class 4 level — the bread and butter of the British racing calendar, solid mid-tier competition — it has won 2 of 6, which is a 33% win rate. That is a horse operating comfortably within its level.

The problem is that comfortable has started to feel distant. Edge Of Darkness last won at Musselburgh in October 2023 — nearly three years ago now — and its last six results read 12-10-12-8-9-10. Those are finishing positions, not just numbers, and finishing in the rear half of a field repeatedly tells a story of a horse that is struggling to find its earlier form. It raced just yesterday, which at least confirms it is active and being campaigned, but Daniel John Howard's yard has only sent out one winner this season, so the whole operation is searching for a breakthrough rather than building on one.

The career started promisingly enough, with a first win at Thirsk in May 2023, and the Musselburgh success five months later suggested a horse on the rise. There are horses that find a second wind, especially over staying distances when they fill out mentally and physically. Right now, Edge Of Darkness needs the stars to align: the right distance, the right ground, and a field it can race through rather than trail.
