Earthwatch

That one win came at Sandown Park on 30 July 2025, and it matters where a horse wins, not just when. Sandown is a track that asks real questions of a horse — a stiff uphill finish that rewards stamina and resolution over pure speed. Winning there is a legitimate result. He also appears to be finding his best distance: over a mile and a touch to a mile and a quarter, he has won 1 from 3 races, a rate of 33%, which means he wins roughly 1 in every 3 races at that trip. For a horse who has struggled to win at all elsewhere, that is a meaningful pattern.

Recent form tells a mixed story. His last six results, working backwards from the most recent, read 4-4-9-8-16-1 — so a win followed by four races in which he barely threatened, before two very bad days. He raced just yesterday, which means he is firmly in training and active. Whether that recent dip reflects the wrong conditions, the wrong company, or simply a horse still working things out is for the trainer to answer.

That trainer is Denis Gerard Hogan, operating out of Cloughjordan in County Tipperary. The yard has been in sharp form, sending out 56 winners this season — that is not a small operation running on luck. Hogan clearly knows how to place horses and get them winning, which gives Earthwatch a decent platform to build from. Most of Earthwatch's races have come at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter end of British racing, where horses are competing for modest prize money and often still finding their feet. He has won 1 from 6 at that level, or roughly 1 in 6, which is fair without being flashy.

A horse with one win who races regularly at the lower levels might sound unremarkable. But Earthwatch is young, trained by someone currently in excellent form, and has already shown he can win at a proper track when conditions suit. There is at least a thread worth following here.
