The level Eager Puccini competes at is worth noting. Class 5 is towards the lower end of British racing, where the competition is gentler and prize money is modest — these are races specifically designed to give horses like this a chance to get their head in front. And yet, in three attempts at that level, there have been no wins and no places. That is a difficult thing to spin positively.
The yard behind the horse, trained by Julia and Shelley Birkett out of Newmarket, is not without ability — 15 winners on the board this season shows a team that knows how to get horses to perform. Newmarket is one of the great training centres in Britain, and the Birkett operation clearly has runners capable of winning races. Eager Puccini, so far, has not been one of them.
The one genuinely interesting detail is that this horse raced just yesterday, so the team clearly have not given up. Whether a change in conditions, a drop in class, or simply the right day will make the difference remains to be seen. For now, Eager Puccini is a horse that has yet to give its supporters a single moment to cheer about.
