The recent form — third, second, second, fourth in the last four races — actually paints a quietly encouraging picture. That is a horse trending in the right direction, and whoever follows the yard closely will have noticed it. The concern, of course, is that Drombeg Lad has not raced in roughly seven months, and a long break can go either way. Some horses come back refreshed and sharper; others need a race or two to find their rhythm again.
Trainer Alex Hales operates out of Edgcote in Oxfordshire, and the yard has sent out 10 winners already this season — a healthy return that suggests horses are arriving at the racecourse in good order. That is a decent sign for a horse returning from a lengthy absence. Drombeg Lad has done all of his racing at Class 4 level so far, which is the solid, competitive middle ground of British racing — not the glamour end of the sport, but not a pushover either. He has yet to win at that level from three attempts, which is honest rather than alarming.
The question now is whether the break has done him any good. He has shown enough in those placed efforts to suggest a win is within reach, and if Hales has him coming back in the kind of form the yard has been producing this season, a first victory might not be far away.
