Now eight years old, Dream Composer has been a remarkably consistent presence at the sharp end of the sport. The Class 2 wins at Epsom in June 2024 and Goodwood in May 2023 are particularly eye-catching — these are two of the most famous and prestigious venues in Britain, the kind of places that attract the best horses in training. And yet this is a horse that first got off the mark at Pontefract, a less glamorous northern track, back in May 2022. That humbler beginning makes the subsequent big-occasion wins feel all the more satisfying.

Ground conditions matter enormously in racing, and Dream Composer has a clear preference for slightly soft ground — wetter than normal but not waterlogged. On that surface, the record reads 4 wins from 10 races, a 40% win rate. That is extraordinary. It means that when the conditions suit, this horse wins two races in every five, compared to roughly one in six across the whole career. the yard who follow the weather forecasts closely know exactly what they are watching for.

Jockey Dougie Costello has become closely associated with this horse, riding in 22 of the 52 races. The horse raced just yesterday and, crucially, won — at Ripon this week in late April 2026. Recent form had looked patchy, with a single win from the last six outings before that. But the Ripon victory is a reminder that at eight, on the right ground, in the right conditions, Dream Composer can still find its best. That is a hard thing for any racehorse to do, and rarer than it looks.
