Dr Shirocco

The most interesting thread in Dr Shirocco's career is his relationship with Musselburgh, the tight, flat track on the east coast of Scotland. He has won there twice from 11 visits — that might sound ordinary, but when you consider he has only won four races in his entire career, it means half his wins have come at the same track. Horses do develop genuine preferences for certain courses, whether it's the shape of the bends, the nature of the ground, or simply the feel of the place, and Musselburgh clearly suits him. His last win came there on 29 November 2024, though that is now 18 months ago and he hasn't won in his last six races since.

Most of his career has been spent at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing, where solid, consistent horses make their living. He has won 2 of his 25 races at that level, or about 1 in every 12, which is on the lower end but not unusual for a horse who places more often than he wins. His regular jockey Patrick Wadge has yet to get him into the winner's enclosure in nine attempts together, which is the kind of statistic that can feel harsh but often simply reflects the competitive nature of the races rather than any failing from horse or rider.

Still racing at 11 and currently active — he ran just one day ago — Dr Shirocco is clearly still enjoying himself, or at least still giving the yard enough encouragement to keep him going. His recent form of four finishes in the top four from his last five completed efforts suggests a horse running consistently well. Whether Musselburgh comes around again on the schedule soon enough to give him a fifth career win is the question worth watching.
