The recent form makes for tough reading too. A fourth-place finish two runs ago offered a small glimmer, but since then it has slipped back — finishing ninth and then sixth before going completely off the radar in its last three outings, where the result column shows nothing but dashes, indicating the horse either fell, was pulled up, or was otherwise unable to complete. That is a concern, and it means the most recent picture is harder to read than a simple string of low finishes.
Trainer Ciaran Murphy operates out of Mullingar in County Westmeath, and to be fair to the yard, it has been in decent form this season — 18 winners is a respectable total and shows this is not a struggling operation. The fact that Dontcavein has not been able to convert any of its six races into even a placed finish is more a reflection on the horse itself than on the team behind it. Murphy has given it a short break of 45 days since its last run, which suggests there is still a belief that improvement is possible — trainers do not freshen up horses they have given up on.
Whether that improvement comes remains to be seen. For now, Dontcavein is a horse that has taken six swings and missed every time.
