The recent form makes that frustration vivid. Reading the last six runs from most recent backwards — 5th, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 7th — you can see a horse that has finished second twice and third twice in its last six outings. Two near-misses in recent months is the kind of form that keeps people interested, and Divot raced just yesterday, so it is very much a horse in the middle of its story rather than at the end of one.
At Class 5 level — the entry-level tier of British racing — Divot has run five times without winning. That is where most of its opportunities have come, and converting one of them into a first victory is clearly the goal for the team at the moment. It is worth saying that plenty of horses operate for years at this level without winning, but plenty also break through; the difference often comes down to finding exactly the right race on exactly the right day.
That team is trained by William Knight, based in Newmarket — the historic home of British racing in Suffolk, a town where the sport genuinely runs through the streets. Knight's yard has sent out 28 winners this season, which is a solid and productive operation. That level of output suggests horses in the yard are running well and finding their races; Divot simply needs to be the one that converts a place into a win.
