The first win came at Downpatrick in September 2024, and Mullins was already talking about the horse in careful, considered terms shortly after. She'd run well in three races on fast, dry ground, won at Downpatrick, and then finished third in a Listed race — one of the better-quality races on the calendar — at Gowran Park, with a horse that would later win at Cheltenham finishing behind her. That's a meaningful piece of form. Beating future Cheltenham winners, even in third place, tells you the horse is operating at a decent level.
The second win arrived at Navan in October 2025, but the last six races since then read 4-5-2-5-4 and a pulled-up, which is a mixed bag at best. A second-place finish in there shows the ability hasn't vanished, but she's not been able to land a blow at the finish. She last raced 35 days ago, so a short freshening-up break is in the books.
What makes Mullins' handling of her interesting is the patience involved. He flagged early on that she prefers better ground — fast and dry rather than wet or soft — and was willing to put her away and wait for conditions to suit. That kind of restraint from a yard that has sent out 31 winners this season suggests a trainer who knows exactly what he has and isn't in a hurry to find out the hard way. Dippedinmoonlight may not be a headline act, but she's a horse being managed with a clear plan, and sometimes that's the most interesting story of all.
