That kind of operation knows how to place a horse to its best advantage, and the pattern with Diplomatic Ash suggests the team has already figured out where this seven-year-old is happiest. Its overall win rate sits at 12%, which works out at roughly 1 in every 8 races, but at Class 4 level — its most common level of competition — that improves to 25%, or 2 from 8. That is a meaningful difference.

The recent form has been a little frustrating. Diplomatic Ash has not won in its last six races, with a sequence of 2-4-4-2 in its four completed runs — consistently close, never quite getting there.
