The moment that defines this horse came at York on 22 August 2024, when Diligently won a top-two race over six furlongs at a big price. Cox was quick to explain why the price was so generous: the run before, at Sandown over five furlongs, had been a disaster — not through any fault of the horse, but because he was boxed in against the rail with nowhere to go, finishing nine lengths back through circumstance rather than ability. Cox had chosen that race deliberately, a short-distance spin to sharpen the horse mentally. It backfired on the day. York was the vindication. For a horse to bounce back from a messy, confidence-sapping run and win one of the top races in Britain at that level is exactly the kind of resilience that gets trainers excited about what might come next.

Cox's Lambourn yard has been in excellent form, sending out 48 winners this season, so Diligently is operating within an outfit that knows how to get horses to their best. And the horse has clearly improved physically — Cox noted after the winter that he had grown significantly stronger, which at four years old is exactly the trajectory you want to see.

The ground matters here. On fast, dry ground, Diligently has won 2 of his 6 races — that's 1 in every 3, which is a genuinely strong record. Strip away the wet-ground runs and he becomes a very different proposition. His most recent win came at Windsor in August 2025, and his last six results — a win, two fourth places, a second, and a ninth sandwiched around that Windsor success — suggest a horse who finds his best form in bursts rather than week to week. He raced just yesterday, so he is firmly in the middle of his season right now. Whether Cox can find the right conditions and the right race to let this horse show what York hinted at remains the central question — but there are genuine reasons to think there is more to come.
