The most recent win came at York just this week — a result that will have turned a few heads. York is one of the finest tracks in Britain, and winning there at any level is a mark of quality. Before that, Dickensian had broken its duck at Musselburgh in April 2025 in a Class 2 race, which is one of the better grades of racing in Britain. Two wins, both at decent levels, on two different tracks — that is an encouraging sign of range and adaptability rather than a horse that only fires in familiar surroundings.
Normal ground conditions seem to suit best: two wins from four races on standard going, a 50% win rate that stands out sharply. The challenge has come when stepping up to the very top level — Class 1 races, the elite end of the sport — where Dickensian is still searching for a first win from four attempts. That is not necessarily a concern at three years old; it simply means the horse is already being asked the biggest questions, and the answers are not far off.
The horse is trained by Kevin Ryan at Hambleton in North Yorkshire, a yard that has sent out 45 winners already this season — that kind of productivity does not happen by accident. Regular jockey Shane Gray has been aboard for six of the seven races and has one win to show for it, a 17% win rate, or roughly 1 in 6 together. The relationship is still developing, but the partnership was in the winner's enclosure at York this week, which is the only number that really matters.
