What makes this slightly puzzling is the yard behind the horse. Ed Walker, based at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, has been in excellent form this season — 75 winners from his stable is a serious output, and he is clearly not short of skill or horses who can win. Desert Heart, though, has not managed to convert any of its four races at Class 4 level into a victory, which is roughly the middle tier of British racing — not the easiest company, but not the toughest either. A horse with genuine talent should, in time, find a race at this level.
Desert Heart raced just yesterday, which means it is very much an active project. Whether Walker and his team see something in the horse that the bare form figures do not yet show — perhaps a particular track, a different distance, or better ground conditions to come — remains to be seen. At four years old, time is not quite running out, but the clock is ticking. Right now, Desert Heart is a horse still searching for its moment.
