Desert Halo

Both of those wins have come at Plumpton, the most recent just eight weeks ago on 9 March 2026. That gives Desert Halo the feel of a horse who knows where the biscuits are kept. Plumpton is a tight, undulating track in East Sussex that suits certain horses down to the ground — literally — and it clearly suits this one. The trainer is Richard J Bandey, based down in Tadley in Hampshire, and his yard has been in solid form this season with 14 winners already sent out. Finding the right track and the right conditions is a big part of training, and Bandey seems to have cracked the code here.

Speaking of conditions, Desert Halo has a clear preference for wet or muddy ground — 2 wins from just 5 races on that surface works out to 40%, which is a remarkable conversion rate. On faster ground, that sharpness disappears. The horse also does its best work at distances between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, winning 2 of its 8 races over that range, or roughly 1 in 4. Put the right conditions and the right distance together and this horse becomes genuinely competitive.

The regular partnership with jockey Harry Bannister is worth noting too. He has ridden Desert Halo in 12 of its 15 races and accounts for both wins — a win rate of 17%, or roughly 1 in 6. That level of familiarity between horse and rider matters more than people realise. One curious footnote: Desert Halo has yet to win in Class 4 races, going 0 from 6 at that level. Both wins have come in different company. It suggests this horse finds its best gear in a specific set of circumstances rather than against a specific grade of opposition. Given it raced just one day ago, there will be more chances to test that theory very soon.
