Demoiselle Kap

Trained by Jennie Candlish out of her yard in Basford, Staffordshire, Demoiselle Kap is part of a stable in fine form — 61 winners sent out this season alone, which suggests this is a team that knows what it is doing. The horse itself is eight years old, so well into its prime racing years, and has clearly settled into a routine of performing at Class 4 level, one step below the elite races. At that level it has won 2 from 6, or roughly 1 in every 3, which is a solid return.

The interesting wrinkle, though, is that Demoiselle Kap hasn't won in its last six races. The recent form — second, fifth, third, fifth, third, second — tells the story of a horse that keeps showing up, keeps finishing in the mix, but hasn't quite got back to the winner's enclosure since March 2025. That's fourteen months without a win, despite racing just yesterday. The placings suggest the ability is still there; the finishing positions of second and third appear four times in that run. It's threading the needle between competitive and frustrating.

Both career wins came at Sedgefield, which is a detail worth remembering. Some horses simply click with a particular track — the layout, the bends, the terrain — and Sedgefield appears to be that place for this one. If Candlish's yard points Demoiselle Kap back there over two miles or more, the record says take notice. Everywhere else, and in shorter races, the picture is considerably less convincing. This is a horse with a very clear comfort zone, and its best days have come when everything aligns perfectly within it.
