For a horse who wins roughly 1 in 17 overall, that is a dramatic improvement, and it suggests there may be more to find when the yard — sorry, when the yard — steps it up in trip. Trainer Terence O'Brien, based in Carrigtoohill in County Cork, has sent out 10 winners this season, so there is form in the yard. Whether Deed Pole gets the chance to stretch its legs over those longer distances more regularly could be the most interesting question surrounding the horse right now.

On normal ground, which is clearly where the horse is most comfortable, it has won 2 from 19 races at an 11% clip. Soft or muddy conditions have not produced a win. Deed Pole is not a horse destined for the big occasion — but there is a third win in there somewhere, and if the yard finds the right distance and the right surface, it might not be far away.
